Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

10. Alice ColtraneDivine Songs

Alice Coltrane is another artist whose music feels like it comes from somewhere beyond the human. Divine Songs is unreal, she’s in tune with frequencies most of us can’t even hear, and she translates them for the rest of us. Her use of voice, the organ, and the Juno and keyboards creates this otherworldly soundscape that feels both vast and intimately personal at the same time.

Emotionally, listening to her is like going nowhere and arriving everywhere. There’s a calmness in her music that almost stops thought, letting you exist fully in the moment. It’s soothing, transformative, and, for me, it captures the spiritual potential of music, how it can be both meditative and transcendent without ever feeling forced.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Jenny Hval, Daniel O’Sullivan
