Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

This was produced by Kramer and I think it’s the best production that Daniel Johnston ever got; before that he was making cassettes on his own in his basement. What’s interesting about Daniel Johnson is he’s a better pianist than he is guitar player but he’s stuck to the guitar more. Lee Ranaldo plays guitar on this record too. Side one is the great side, side two is still good, e.g. ‘True Love Will Find You In The End’ is on it. I met Daniel in Austin, Texas in 1994 – and yeah, you always remember meeting him. ‘Some Things Last A Long Time’, makes you wanna cry. And I love the lyric, "your picture is still on my wall." There’s something about Daniel Johnston that can break your heart. Something about him that really makes you feel his pain, a bit like Elvis Presley.
