Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

8. XasthurPortal Of Sorrow

This genre has been called ‘depressive suicidal black metal’. It’s truly a creepy, twisted, asymmetrical masterpiece that captures my darkest feelings elegantly.

Given the way that many music scenes have been homogenised or all but disappeared, does the enduring separateness of metal and its various fraternities appeal to you?

Yes, metal is like an unstoppable disease. I like that it’s very direct and very masculine. If anyone thinks it’s hard to be in a band, they should try being in a metal band. You will work your ass off and get no respect.
