Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

7. CoilMusick To Play In The Dark Vol. 2

My friend and former bandmate Spencer Grady introduced me to Coil and although I was somewhat bewitched by them, it wasn’t until my early twenties that I went further back and faster. Coil is shamanic music that tips reality on an inverted axis. I’ve listened to them and literally had portals open up in front of me. Their world is imbued with such intent it floods your mind with archetypal symbols, the skull becomes a mirror. Ancient spectacles of luminous black pools and long silver beaches. They tap into a fundamental energy, an investigation into sentient nature. It fed into a constellation that I was delving further into alongside Austin Spare, Georges Bataille, Brion Gysin and Derek Jarman. This album in particular is so beautifully assembled. I’ve flown far into astral space while listening to ‘Where Are You?’, "surrounded by things we cannot penetrate".
