Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

5. William BasinskiThe Disintegrations Loops I

The most hypnotic of records and one I regularly put on in the studio when I need to reset my thoughts. For such a seemingly simple piece of music – a single, repeating loop literally disintegrating over the course of an hour – the room genuinely feels empty when it has finished. To me the record represents pure escapism. The music is entirely different but I get the same feeling from those transcendental moments in a club: those times when the outside world is nothing more than a distant, inconsequential thought in your head.
