13. Nadine ShahFast Food

There are three albums I often recommend to people: Sakura by Susumu Yokota, Letter To Yu by Bolis Pupul, and Fast Food by Nadine Shah. They never fail. I recommend them so much I should be getting royalties!
I bought this album in Fopp when I was a bit cash-conscious. It feels really personal. Only she could write that record. She’s completely upfront about mental health; about her mixed heritage background; what it’s like being a young British Muslim woman. When I was in Baraclough, I’d started doing this really affected, Radio 4 announcer voice, but listening to Nadine really own her Yorkshire accent made me own every aspect of my voice: the fact I’m obviously an LGBTQ+ person; the fact that my accent is very identifiably South London. Hurrah for Nadine!
