Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

6. The Notorious BIGReady To Die

You’ve got to be a super young buck or a super old buck if you don’t know about Biggie or Tupac. This was part of my growth. I used to do a lot of listening before writing and it was a lot of hip-hop I was listening to along with bashment and reggae, and Biggie Smalls is one of the leaders for my generation: 96 to 95. He was the guy who had the limelight at these times. So yeah man, Biggie, definitely one of my top five ever. I was like thirteen or fourteen when Ready To Die came out – it was the coolest stuff you listen to at that age. Them times there, what your mum and dad are listening to is cool, but it’s some OG stuff.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: John Stanier, Lydia Lunch
