Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

4. My Bloody ValentineIsn’t Anything

I didn’t hear this at the time, but I guess it would have been mind-blowing at 12 – I’m sure I wouldn’t have been ready for them! I probably heard them in 1992 or 1993, through the friends that I had a band in high school with. There are some songs on it that I can really identify as influencing my sound in terms of having acoustic guitars, like ‘Lose My Breath’ and ‘No More Sorry’, which had really shimmering acoustic guitars. A big part of my early sound was about trying to sample almost purely acoustic instruments, so again we go back to this idea of having an experimental production, but still with melody. Something that still feels song-based, but is not in a traditional song structure.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Neil Halstead, Peter Strickland
