10. Hans ZimmerThe Thin Red Line OST
I can’t talk about influences on my music without including film scores. In the case of The Thin Red Line, I’m certainly not the only one who would cite this as a main influence. It’s one the greatest film scores ever. When people think of Zimmer, a lot of them will think of his big blockbusters without realising that this one has influenced almost everything that came after it. There’s not a single composer who’s not asked to reference it all the time.
I’m sure people are sick to the death of being told to capture what he did over and over again. [laughs] But it really is one of those monumental works that changed the face of the genre. I’ve always thought it was beautiful and perfectly done. I’m a crazy Terrence Malick fan and have been since I first saw Days of Heaven and Badlands. But I would put The Thin Red Line in the category of ‘perfect film, perfect score’.
