Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

2. Pharaoh SandersThembi

JM: This record combines several things that I love, which is beautiful jazz, spiritual jazz and ambient jazz – it’s just a beautiful record. We used to play it a lot on Solid Steel radio back in the day, when we were on Kiss FM – when there were no adverts, and we could play two hours of music without interruption. It formed what we called the Alien Sphinx – two hours of music anywhere we wanted to go. But I think it’s that track ‘Thembi’ which is the most ambient of the ones on there. It’s possibly the influence of Alice Coltrane coming in that makes this my favourite Sanders to play.

Selected in other Baker’s Dozens: Félicia Atkinson, Alasdair Roberts
