Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

8. The StranglersNo More Heroes

No More Heroes has more of my favourite tracks on. ‘Bitching’, ‘Dead Ringer’, they were some of my favourites. I remember seeing them on Top Of The Pops and Jean Jacques was looking particularly menacing, he was a cool figure in the early days of punk, his dispassionate stare was quite good. So No More Heroes was probably my favourite album. I wouldn’t call them punk, to be honest with you, because the minute I heard the Hammond organ it was clear they weren’t punk, but they wrote some fantastic songs. I saw them play one good gig and one disastrous gig. I got a ticket at the last minute to see them in Southampton, and it was bloody terrible.
