6. Kitchens of DistinctionStrange Free World
You don’t see many Kitchens Of Distinction fans these days, and what a tragedy that is. I saw them many many times. The lyrics were great, they were really nice people too, really humble. Why didn’t they ever make it! Like the Mary Chain, Kitchens were ahead of their time, if they’d come a few years later they’d have made it big. The guitarist had a phenomenal ability to generate noise with his guitar, it was a beautiful thing to hear, it really was. The best gig I ever saw was in Salisbury Arts Centre, a converted church. It was a tiny, place, half full, which is a terrible indictment, they must have been into it because they played some great tracks and the sound quality in that church was fantastic. They did two or three other great albums as well. They had that single ‘Drive That Fast’ which had a music video and got on some shows, but they never made it, which was a shame. But they went on for quite a long time, because I must have been going to see them for a period of over five years at least. I went on a disastrous trip to Hawaii, and walking into this bar, and they were playing the Kitchens Of Distinction, on the other side of the bloody planet. He had all their albums. They made to Hawaii, but they didn’t make it anywhere else, unfortunately.
