Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

8. Midnight Cowboy

FB: I love city films in general – that’s true of a few films on the list. Midnight Cowboy has been one of my favourites since about the age of sixteen. There are loads of great John Barry films, but my favourite part of the music here isn’t a Barry track. It’s the Harry Nilsson cover of ‘Everybody’s Talkin”, which is one of my favourite songs.

RZ: He uses the harmonica almost to represent echoes of his past. It’s mournful, or wistful – a homesickness. For me it represents the character: the country boy in the city. With The Duke Of Burgundy I started thinking of themes for the characters right away: Evelyn’s theme, Cynthia’s theme. A lot of the ideas that came up right after reading the script stuck, although the production or orchestration changed later on to match the atmosphere of the scene.
