2. The Spirit Of The Beehive
RZ: It’s quite haunting, and it’s got a really good use of the flute. The flute is often sweet, or pastoral. Here it’s really eerie. The whole film is unbelievably atmospheric, and the music, a little like Brokeback Mountain, is embedded in that eeriness. Faris fell asleep looking straight at the screen. Faris Badwan: I just like to daydream. I’m thinking about other things. But The Spirit Of The Beehive really is a brilliant film. I was in a bad mood because I wanted to go out or something. We watched it at Chris [Cunningham’s] house on a newly-acquired projector which we were all really excited about.
RZ: When it finished Chris and I were like, ‘Wasn’t that great?’ Whereas Faris was saying, ‘That was rubbish’. FB: But it stuck with me. It was weird. I bought it myself and watched it again. I really loved it. It goes to show that these things take time.
