Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

FB: This is a soundtrack that a lot of people know even if they’re only dimly aware of the film. You can use the same adjectives to describe the landscape as the music. It’s barren. The minimal phrasing works so well with the desert. I like things that could be nothing when you first hear them. That’s the stuff that really lasts. When you get everything about a piece of music straight away you’re probably not going to like it in a year’s time.

I used to fall asleep to this soundtrack a lot. Coincidentally I also used to fall asleep to the film a lot too. I’ve never actually seen it all the way through. I tried three times. I always fall asleep when they’re walking across the car park, about 20 minutes from the end. I mean properly asleep – eyes closed and everything.
