Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

12. Riz OrtolaniCannibal Holocaust

FB: Because there were rumours that this was an actual snuff film, that the actors who died in the film had actually died, they had it in their contracts to avoid all public appearances for a year after the film was released, to fuel the rumours that they were actually dead. It’s pretty gruesome. But there are a couple of Riz Ortolani’s pieces that I really love. This marriage of quite minimal electronic pieces and beautiful orchestral parts that come out of nowhere.

RZ: When Nino Rota died, all of a sudden, Ortolani did the memorial for him. He conducted the orchestra. I think he might even have completed some of his compositions. Riz is a bit younger. Nino Rota – I wish I could have met him. He always believed that music lasts if it comes from the soul. That’s how he worded it. If it wasn’t connected to the soul it was pointless.
