Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

5. The FatesFuria

Una Baines is an inspiration! Listening to this record really helped me fight some personal demons that were getting in the way of finishing my second album Look Up Sharp. It was the first time I was trying to finish an album without a co-producer. I was missing having someone to bounce ideas off and mostly just provide technical expertise with the recordings I’d made. So there was a lot of self doubt with that record and pushing myself to learn new skills. To my ears this record celebrates women’s abilities, their strengths and power. It pushed me to embrace my own skills. I’d read a bit about Baines having a hard time before making this record and I think you can hear her working through some of that on the record. I am also inspired by the sound world of this record which embraces folk, industrial sounds, post punk. It’s a perfect mix.
