13. Carole KingTapestry
This was the first record I ever bought with my own pocket money and I was really attracted to female musicians when I was a kid. I loved Karen Carpenter as a drummer, and I loved Carole King because she wrote songs that were really well crafted. As a role model, there weren’t that many women that I really knew about.
She sat down and really poured her heart out at the piano. I remember hearing those songs on the way to camp like ‘I Feel The Earth Move’ and all of that record and it got so ingrained on my brain, and that’s when I first understood what a hook was. By listening to her, I learned how to craft the perfect song and I understood how a hook works. And that’s the education I got from Carole King. That went into my brain and it did not come out.
