Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

6. Out.Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Songs

I first moved back to Louisville shortly after the singer from Out. passed away, so I missed them as a live performing entity, but I really got to know Dave Bird, their guitarist, who was always playing in lots of bands. Then I started trying to imitate Dave Bird at my shows, because he’s like a lion on stage, like the lion played by Bert Lahr [in The Wizard Of Oz] with a smile and a heart of gold, but also a lot of drive and power.

They’ve just put out this 30th anniversary edition of their record, and it’s only recently that I’ve really listened to their lyrics. To hear this really aggressive, powerful music, then this voice that is very sensible and balanced and emotional and super intelligent, just screaming at your face, but it feels… good? You’re like, yeah, give me some more! Because you’re trying to give me something generous, not combative.
