13. Rachel’sMusic For Egon Schiele

I wanted to bring the end of this list back to contemporary classical music, as it’s something that hasn’t left the music scene, primarily, thanks to Rachel Grimes. I’ve seen her in bands since high school. She was in a band called Hula Hoop back then with other friends of mine, before she developed this beautiful, contemporary classical composing and performance practice. She’s still doing it, too – I’ve also been listening recently to a beautiful soundtrack that she made for a film called The Doctor From India, featuring my friend and recent collaborator, Jacob Duncan, who’s all over my new album too, playing saxophone and flute.
Music For Egon Schiele was Rachel’s second record, and it was just mind boggling, to me, to think about what she was introducing to our avant-garde, outsider punk scene. She fleshed out the potential for musical visions in our community, and helped everyone here realise that there were no boundaries. She made a massive difference to everyone, giving us the idea that this kind of music is what we do, too.
