9. Hicks From The Sticks
One of the most important things about punk, for me, was that it allowed groups outside of London to put records out with having to move south. It romanticised the North for me – the first holiday I had on my own was spent walking around derelict cotton mills. This was one of the best local compilations, it was much better than East Of Croydon, which was our local equivalent. It was all from Yorkshire and Lancashire. Modern Eon’s ‘Choreography’ was really special, very minimal, and the singer sounded asthmatic. ‘You’re Without Sound’ by Clock DVA – that sounded important. I assumed all these groups were better read than I was, and all took their music extremely seriously. I remember being really shocked when I read that Peter Hook had a scrambling bike.
