Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. ScaramangaSeven Eyes, Seven Horns

Scaramaga first came to my attention as a Kool Keith collaborator, in the Dr Octagon era when he went by Sir Menelik. I fucked with some of the music they were doing. Eventually he and Keith had a falling out or whatever, and he introduced Scaramanga. I mean, he was already using the Scaramanga alias, but then he came back on the scene, for me at least, as Scaramanga. He always had these different personalities and Scaramanga was one of them. And I liked some of that, so I went and copped the CD. And I was blown away.

I do like the production and stuff on the record, but the one thing that holds up over time is… dude can really, really, really, really rhyme. Like, really rhyme. He had styles that were like, you’d be ‘oh, man, I want to go and MC. I’m going to just learn it. There’s something dope here. How can I do that?’ And he was one of those people where the answer was "you can’t."
