Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

5. Roscoe MitchellThe Solo Concert

Just a genius. He gets credit, but still not enough. This is one hell of a record, and to hear someone work in such an exposed way as a soloist has really inspired how I work with the turntable, and how I consider samples. The space that Roscoe takes, the endurance of his performance and the physicality is absolutely huge – I can hear it, I’ve seen it, and it’s an aspiration for me to have an album like that. Amazing record.
