Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

3. Aphex TwinCome To Daddy

I was about 16 and just starting to DJ, and I remember going to RPM – a record store in Newcastle – trying to buy hip hop records with pocket money from school. I saw this front cover, picked it up and went “what the fuck is this?” The guy behind the counter went “that’s real weird shit,” and I said “okay, I’ll have a listen.”

Aphex Twin is a genius. I talk about him in lectures at university, and how he talks about Iannis Xenakis’ UPIC, a computer programme that was like a predecessor to the iPad apps where you draw shapes that translate into music. This EP goes to so many different places. For him, genre isn’t a consideration – I think it halts his imagination. He’s just going to bust through it. He’s just going to do what he needs to do with a sample. It doesn’t surprise me he’s interested in electro-acoustic music because of the way he works with those samples. I love a hardcore nerd, and he is one.
