Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

10. Michael JacksonHIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I

Michael Jackson, when we were kids, was so big, I think we were there at the moment when ‘Thriller’ came out, and we were playing video games in the arcade and just obsessed with Michael. The music videos were playing on MTV a lot, so you didn’t really need to own anything, they’d just be on. As soon as we’d hear it we’d just run to the TV and sit there and watch the whole video. I think we must have had this on cassette though. He had a song on this record called ‘She’s Out Of My Life’ which really struck me, away from all the hits like ‘Billie Jean’ and ‘Black Or White’ and ‘Bad’ and stuff, I came across this song and it just was really really beautiful and he was being so gentle, and just sort of singing without all of the other stuff. It really impacted me, I kind of really fell in love with that song. ‘Remember The Time’ is also on this, and ‘Stranger In Moscow’ which was a really hard hitting song; it hits you right in the chest. Some of the less mainstream songs of Michael’s were on here that I really love.
