Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

4. AutechreDraft 7.30

Autechre are one of those groups with a solid fanbase and people are really into them. This came out in 2003 and was the first of theirs that I’d bought. By then, I think drum & bass had really started to tail off and I was looking for something different. I didn’t even get into grime much because all of the pirate radio stations were really territorial; like, we’re into drum & bass, fuck grime sort of thing. I discovered Autechre and I think their golden era is either side of Draft. I really loved the sound because I hadn’t heard anything like it before. It was this metallic, clinical sound with really organic elements and finding this area led me to discover Morton Subotnick and other experimental electronic stuff.

I think this was a necessary thing for me to do musically; as much as I love drum & bass, Draft allowed me to diverge into the leftfield. After being so involved in a very specific way of making music for such a long time, it was important to discover something that made me realise I could do what I want musically. Autechre symbolise the start of that.
