Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. Jonny LMagnetic

Jonny L has always done something different. He had a period where he made big rave tunes and then he disappeared for a bit. This came out during the same time as Wormhole, and the big tune from it was ‘See Red’. I used to mix that in to the big tune on Wormhole with a big double drop. What I love about Magnetic is that it’s really forward thinking.

His beats had this angular edge to them that I take a lot from for the East Man sound. He uses a lot of sci-fi sounds, but there’s still that driving momentum and it’s still dance music. He isn’t afraid to experiment but, ultimately, you can still vibe out to it and as an MC you can ride over it, there’s still that bassline to it. I remember being in Telepathy hearing ‘See Red’ and thinking, "Oh my god, what is this?" You hadn’t really heard something quite like that. He had his voice.
