Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

7. Edvard GriegPeer Gynt Suite No. 1, performed by Orchestra Of The Amsterdam Philharmonic Society

Massively influential on me. It’s that [imitates the central motif of Grieg’s ‘In The Hall Of The Mountain King’, which appears in the suite]  â€˜dum dum dum dum dum-dum-dum’, like the feeling in Jaws. Then in comes this vocal, ‘In the hall of the mountain king!’ and I’d hide behind a cushion, like ‘Oh my god!’ I was absolutely loving it, but terrified too, because it was like the troll king was after me. I visualised it; I felt every bit of it. We lived in a small cottage but with quite a big garden, and in the middle was a weeping willow. I used to put on the record, then race down to go under the tree and live the whole thing again, pretend that that was where the hall of the Mountain King was. It made a really, really big impression, but it’s the music that did it because that melody is so fabulous.
