Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. Paul And Ritchie And The Crying Shames‘September In The Rain’ / ‘Come On Back’

It’s Joe Meek again, dark rock, broody and moody. ‘Come On Back; was the one that I really loved. That reverby sound must have informed me a lot. You wouldn’t think it was from the same band as ‘September In The Rain’! I didn’t know who Joe Meek was at the time, [the fact he was present on a number of favourite records] was something I learned afterwards. I just know that something sonically was making my ears prick up and attracting me emotionally. It must be the experimental side that opened up something big for me, and darker I would say. Obviously, what we know about Joe Meek now is very dark. I’m also drawn into a big melody, so it was the mixture of those things.
