13. Chris IsaakWicked Game
This is his album that opens with ‘Wicked Game’ and has an instrumental version of ‘Wicked Game’ at the end – and a lot of fantastic songs in between.
Is it the collection of his early hits?
Is it a greatest hits album? Really? Maybe that is why it is so great. I don’t really know what to say about this choice. It is brilliant and all of the songs on the record are phenomenal. The instrumentation of that record is really good – it’s a bit jazzy, but almost has an Ennio Morricone touch to it, while in some other places it has a surf rock feel.
I think Chris Isaak and Kim Larsen’s voices have the same effect on me. They are very direct and touch my heart. I heard ‘Wicked Game’ first, like most people did, and I never get tired of that song. It doesn’t matter whom I play it for and how many times I hear it, it is just perfect. I can listen to that song every day and not get tired of it. I have had this record since I was about 14 years old, so it has been with me for a long time. This album, together with Nico and Philip Glass, are the albums I have loved for the longest.
I have never seen him play live. I don’t know anything about him. I am not very interested in who he is or what he does now. I have this album and it is great. Maybe he has tons of albums like this and I am missing them. I don’t think so – I have a feeling this is his peak. At least he has a greatest hits album. How old is he? Is he still alive? He should do a duo with Kim Larsen.
Or Chris Isaak could do a duo with you.
Or we could do a trio! That would be amazing. But, we would need to unpolish Chris Isaak – I assume he has become very successful and feels the need to keep a polished image. Kim Larsen and I are going to take Chris Isaak, throw him to the ground and strip him of his polish.
