Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

7. Sarah DavachiFigures In Open Air

We’ve gone from my shortest one to the longest one. It’s almost three hours long. This was the other one that won my Spotify most played of the year. It’s a live album, not that I knew that at the time. But it’s a live compilation of different concerts. This was my going to bed music throughout lockdown. Trying to calm myself and just stay in a peaceful place mentally.

I actually fell asleep to it last night. I don’t know if this is exactly right but I read that, you know Night At The Museum where Ben Stiller is the watcher in the museum and the animals come to life. Well, Sarah was the caretaker for a museum of old instruments. My understanding of it is she would record her drone music in the museum using the instruments, so it was kind of Night At The Museum vibe. I might have got that sort of wrong but that’s my mental image when I hear her music. I don’t think about synths, even though you never really know with these kinds of records what’s making the sound. What I’ve noticed is that I think she’s using instruments that were made in the 1700s. I feel like she’s got a pump organ and she’s just making it sound like it’s an infinite drone piece.
