Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

9. KhruangbinHasta El Cielo

Khruangbin is this trio a friend of mine called Pete told me about. He said you’ll love this band and showed a YouTube clip of them playing in a record store. It was the three of them, jamming and it’s just a really cool downbeat sort of funky. Like Jimi Hendrix but chilled. It’s just a good collection of sounds.

Like a lot of records on my list, this album does one thing. Actually, this album is not their regular style. It’s a dub version of their previous album. But this one to me, I put it on and just enjoy having it on. I like that dub production anyway.

I saw them play Desert Daze Festival the last time Ride was in America, towards the end of 2019. They played to a really, really big crowd on a warm, humid, beautiful night in California. It was just a really good way to see the perfect scenario. Coming back to check out the music this was the album that felt close to that. If you see them live, they do all these cover versions.

They did a Pink Floyd song off Wish You Were Here called ‘Have a Cigar’. Pink Floyd album tracks from the 70s that if you know them it’s just like, oh my god, I never thought I’d ever hear this in this moment. So great, really playful with it all. And then they’ll go into like a real ‘90s club classic, and be able to play it perfectly as well. It’s like your ideal party band.
