Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

3. Iron MaidenNumber Of The Beast

There is something ridiculous about Iron Maiden – they are never going to make a profound statement or be regarded as intellectual heavyweights, but we don’t want them to be. We want them to be Iron Maiden. Eddie is the enduring mascot of Maiden. Love him or loathe him, Eddie is Maiden and Maiden are Eddie. He has become a superhero, a comic strip icon. Who doesn’t look forward to a new Maiden album just to see what Eddie will look like this time around? I’m a pre-teen trapped in a middle-aged body – I like monsters and Eddie is one of the best, and I think his ultimate manifestation is on the sleeve of Number Of The Beast. Satan, Eddie and Maiden, it’s the perfect recipe.
