Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

11. Meredith MonkDolmen Music

Meredith Monk has always been active in the avant-garde scene, or in “new music”. I liked her work a lot and always connected her with Laurie Anderson, though I don’t know if they actually knew each other. I always liked Monk’s approach and experimented with voice, using it as a pure instrument over a tool for verbal communication.

I guess for me she represents a larger group of experimental musicians coming from this new school of ‘classical’ musicians. They never made “pop” music, but her record had a big impact on it.
