Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

7. Al GreenGets Next To You

EC: Adam Kidron produced [Orange Juice’s 1982 debut album] You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever. He played Al Green constantly. What a voice! He’s still going, he’s a church guy nowadays, isn’t he? He has a church.

GM: And he was on Top Of The Pops a lot. We’d see him a lot.

EC: ‘Tired of Being Alone’ is such a classic. His version of ‘The Letter’ by Alex Chilton and The Beatles’ ‘Get Back’ [on 1969’s Green Is Blues] are just crazy too.

Did soul singers like him influence your singing?

EC: I didn’t like my voice. [On Orange Juice’s records] You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever, Rip It Up, Texas Fever, I can’t stand my voice.

GM: You always said I was a better singer by the time we got to the last album [1984’s The Orange Juice]. But you’re hyper-critical. A lot of that is because people were very, very critical back then.

EC: Loads, especially the NME back in the day.

GM: I mean, lots of people did like his singing. But people think these days that Orange Juice got fantastic press all the time. They really didn’t. They were quite polarising.
