Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

EC: Oh yes, of course. It’s ‘Summer Breeze’, this one. Seals and Crofts wrote it. It’s a fantastic album.

GM: It’s also got [sings] “Whooo’s that layyy-deee?” Edwyn’s music has lots of soul influences in it. His sounds are quite informed by The Isley Brothers in lots of places.

EC: Back to ‘A Girl Like You’. You know the fuzz on it? [Beautifully sings the riff after the first verse, from 45 seconds to one minute] That’s not got an amplifier. It’s direct, using the desk. That’s me trying to get the Isley Brothers sound. And it sounds great!

GM: A direct injection! I love The Highways Of My Life.

EC: Oh yes, I love that too. Thanks to the Isleys for everything!
