Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

8. Talk TalkSpirit Of Eden

This guy called Dave Bates, the manager of House Of Love, told me about this band called Talk Talk about ’87/’88, and he told me to get into this record and I thought it was fucking phenomenal. They’d made a few records in the early eighties and they were kind of like New Romantics, and I had them down as a pop group, I never had them down as a serious band. But then I heard Spirit Of Eden and it blew me away. It shows you the difference in music now, that they existed on a major record label for years making interesting records and didn’t get dropped. That just doesn’t happen any more. Now that system just doesn’t exist – a label supporting an artist just because they’re good!
