Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

7. Faust

Virgin Records put out The Faust Tapes and it cost 49 pence, so everybody bought it because that was the price of a single. Everybody at school had it; everybody at school hated it. I.Fuckin’. Loved. It. I’m not sure if I loved it because everyone else hated it and I just wanted to be weird. This one is on Faust IV. Hans Joachim Irmler is known to me as ‘Joe’ and in the early 2000s the Nightingales did a gig in London and a bloke came backstage and said, ‘I believe you’re into Faust’ and I said, ‘Yeah’, and he asked me, ‘Why have you never played at the Klangbad Festival?’ and I said, ‘Because I’ve never heard of it, what is it?’. He told me it was Joe from Faust’s festival. One day I got home, and my wife said, ‘Oh, there’s a really odd message for you on the answer machine’. And it’s this German bloke going: ‘Your music’s fantastic and we want to book you for the Klangbad festival.’ Then there’s a link to him and his missus at the time dancing in their studio listening to the Nightingales!
