6. Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band‘Pachuco Cadaver’

I got into Beefheart througha mate called Dave. Whoever bought the records for Wolverhampton Library had a massive influence on me. Dave took loads out. He was going ‘Have you heard this?’ And it would be the Beaver & Krause album and I’d say, ‘No, I haven’t, but I like T. Rex!’ And he’d go, ‘Hey, no man. You’ve gotta hear this!’ And then one time it was: ‘Have you heard of Captain Beefheart?’ I can’t pretend I liked it instantly and it was very much a ‘What is this?’, but I grew to love it. And I could probably still sing it from beginning to end. Deep down I wanted to have long hair and flared trousers and consequently I wasinterested in any music you could call progressive. It didn’t matter if it was the MC5 or Wishbone Ash.
