Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

8. Einstürzende NeubautenPerpetuum Mobile

NK: We’re both huge Neubauten fans and it’s super difficult to pick one release because they have an epic catalogue but I think one thing that we both appreciate about them is – I think this one was more my pick than Adam’s – that they have the ability to be so harsh and severe and yet so gentle. I think that’s a really difficult thing to pull off. Going back to John Lydon and those vocals, I think with Blixa he’s just such a fucking inspiring human. He has such charisma about the way he projects himself. He’s such an enigmatic vocalist. There’s not many people out there like him and I just wish I could be him. Tracks like ‘Youme & Meyou’ are so poetic; I love how he sings "and it’s granted" in that tune that I can’t even reach. It’s like listening to Pink Floyd’s ‘Comfortably Numb’ and feeling slayed by the emotional power of a song like that. I feel like you get the same feeling from that particular song.

AM: I get the feeling that with Neubauten they take the approach of: ‘oh, really, you think we’re this? No we’ve still got something to prove and we’re not going to stop’. I love those sorts of bands.
