3. Nitzer EbbShowtime
NK: Coming of age and growing up we were both huge Nitzer Ebb fans. They had a huge impact on us.
AM: Huge. This album in particular. We really like bands that don’t repeat themselves and they could have easily kept the first album’s sound but they kept exploring deeper and deeper.
NK: They were really pushing themselves. On this record Douglas [McCarthy] almost becomes more of lyricist or a poet almost. There’s more time in the music for expression rather than just repetition. Also, the song ‘There Is Fun to Be Had’ is sort of a humorous off-the-cuff theme that has always been present in ADULT.
AM: We made a song on our second album called ‘We Know How To Have Fun’ but it’s our most dirge-y song and we were looking at bands like Nitzer Ebb and The Stooges, bands that were using the word fun yet making sounds that weren’t fun. I love that humour. I can listen to this just for the synth work though, the synth on the beginning of ‘Lighting Man’ you then see bands like Depeche Mode use that sound on Violator. ‘Getting Closer’ to us is a perfect song.
