Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

13. Severed HeadsCity Slab Horror

AM: This was a hard one to pick which record. Rotund For Success is also one of our favourites but we picked this one because – like all the other albums – it ebbs and flows between our definition of pop and experimentation.

NK: You can go from the song ‘Guests’, which is so haunting yet beautiful, to ‘We’ve Come to Bless This House’ an amazing song with so much great experimentation.

AM: I would say there’s no other artist more than Tom Ellard that I will go to when working on a record and sit down with headphones on and listen to. Everything from the drum programming to the fact that he will get something that is almost pop and then add like this horrific distortion line. He always puts a hurdle in there. Like a lot of things we’ve picked there’s a playful element but also a really severe side. I think he’s a really brilliant writer.
