11. BroadcastThe Noise Made By People
I think I heard Broadcast first via an internet radio station that Andy Votel from Twisted Nerve/ Finders Keepers (they brought out The ERC’s debut LP 1612 Underture) was DJing on, around the start of the new millennium. I think it was ‘Come On Let’s Go’ from this album that he played, which I still think to this day is probably the greatest pop song for outsiders ever written. Obviously there’s the United States Of America/Fifty Foot Hose influence, but their incredible musical legacy far outshines their early influences.
I’m hoping in 30 years’ time music lovers the world over will have finally caught up with Broadcast, and they are hailed as the great group that they are. It’s a scientific fact that ‘Papercuts’ by Broadcast is a better track than anything on Exile On Main Street.
It’s time Exile…, Blonde On Blonde, Sgt. Pepper’s…, etc, were taken down from the record shop racks. They need to stop pushing these executive rock stars on kids, it’s not healthy. Broadcast are a constant inspiration and a reliable and eternal/internal friend… however, Mick Jagger is a hideous prancing twat.
