Baker's Dozen

Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

3. The Jimi Hendrix ExperienceElectric Ladyland

It was perhaps the Christmas of 1979. I think we had a seven inch single, ‘Foxy Lady’ on one side and ‘Purple Haze’ on the other. I remember listening to it for the first time thinking, "This guy’s meant to be the greatest guitar player of all time." It impressed me, but then I was thinking, "Hang on, that’s an overdub. If he’s so great, why is he doing an overdub?" Which is so ridiculous! Of those three Jimi Hendrix Experience albums, which are all fantastic, I think Electric Ladyland [is the best], just because it was him really stretching out. Jimi Hendrix’s guitar playing has still never been surpassed. It was a mind blowing experience, to coin the name of the band.
