Artists discuss the 13 records that shaped their lives

5. Target Video VHS tapes

There was a record shop that I ended up working at a few years later and they sold these VHS tapes of punk gigs. I remember buying a couple of Misfits ones, and then a Black Flag one. I had to save up my money for these, it was like, 30 bucks for these bootleg videotapes – expensive! The Black Flag one also had a bunch of extra stuff at the end – songs from a bunch of different videos. I discovered so many different bands through these videos – I think that’s where I first ever saw footage of Throbbing Gristle, on a bootleg Target video clip of ‘Discipline’ from the Kezar show. Whoever made the bootleg would add a Target video sampler at the end, so it always says Target Video at the bottom throughout the whole video, which used to drive me nuts at the time, but in hindsight, is pretty cool.
