Part of the Sex Pistols was a bit disappointing to me because they seemed so straight rock and roll on one hand, compared to the punk I had heard before, like the Butthole Surfers. But then this tape has radio excerpts and advertisements and interviews that puts them in context. It gives you a glimpse into the media hyperbole – there’s a radio ad for a live concert that’s like: ‘more bizarre than Alice Cooper, more destructive than Kiss… the Sex Pistols!’ Then there’s these live recordings mixed in the background cut up, and the weirder tracks on that really struck me, and helped me see how powerful they were at the time.
