While Hollywood scrounges through its couch cushions searching for that elusive shiny copper of originality, we can expect scores of film adaptations of books in the coming years. If In fact we can probably expect plenty of remakes of previous book adaptations and movie sequels to books that didn’t have sequels in the first place.

We at the Quietus thought it’s about time we look back at this rich tradition of raping the literary world for ideas and compile a definitive top 10, just like in High Fidelity (the book not the movie). This time, we’d like your help.

Send us your top 5 best and bottom 5 worst film adaptations of books. the first 10 responses will win a pair of tickets to see Toby Young, author of How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, speak on Sept 11 about the new film of his book starring Simon Pegg. The best answers will be published on our master list.

Is Carrie or The Shawshank Redemption the better Stephen King flick? Is Kubrick’s Lolita too funny for Nabokov? Does Apocalypse Now! have anything at all to do with Heart of Darkness?

Remember, this is not ‘what is the best movie taken from a book’ We’re asking:

Which movies do justice to or creatively reinterpret their source material the best?

and

Which movies completely lose the plot and ruin the book for everyone?

Graphic novels DO NOT apply here. We’ll do that list later…
