The Artist Rights Alliance has issued an open letter criticising the use of artificial intelligence to infringe upon the rights of artists.

The statement has been backed by more than 200 signatories, including the likes of R.E.M., Elvis Costello, Billie Eilish, Kacey Musgraves, MacDe Marco, Jon Bon Jovi and Nicki Minaj. In it, the Artist Rights Alliance asks that developers, technology companies and various digital music services "pledge that they will not develop or deploy AI music-generation technology, content, or tools that undermine or replace the human artistry of songwriters and artists or deny us fair compensation for our work".

Warning of the economic impact ongoing use of AI would have on artists, as well as the diluting effect it could have on creativity, the statement, which you can read in full here, concluded: "This assault on human creativity must be stopped. We must protect against the predatory use of AI to steal professional artists' voices and likenesses, violate creators' rights, and destroy the music ecosystem."
