Príncipe Unveils Compilation Of Formative Kuduro Tracks

'DJs Di Guetto' revisits a digital-only compilation that originally came out in 2006

Príncipe is releasing a compilation of formative kuduro tracks, titled DJs Di Guetto.

Out in August, the compilation serves as a partial reissue of the 2006 digital-only release Vol. 1, which collected 37 tracks by key affiliates of the Lisbon label such as Marfox, N.K., Nervoso, Jesse, Pausas and Fofuxo. Príncipe’s reissue will arrive as a double-LP featuring 13 tracks from the original compilation. You can listen to one of the featured tracks, DJ Fofuxo’s ‘É Africa’, just below.

Kuduro is a style of music that originated in Angola in the late ’80s, but subsequently evolved in the neighbourhoods of Lisbon. Príncipe has showcased the sound (as well as affiliated genres such as batida, tarraxo and funaná) in various forms since its first release in 2011, with almost 50 further records having followed in the 12 years since. If you’re a tQ subscriber, you can revisit our 2022 piece on Lisbon’s tarraxo scene here.

Key Príncipe label artists DJ Danifox, DJ Firmeza and DJ N***a Fox will perform together as O Ghettão at next month’s Dekmantel festival in Amsterdam.

Príncipe will release DJs Di Guetto on August 4, 2023.
