Embryo – Rocksession (1973)

I don't actually own this record. But I remember seeing it years ago, picking it up and laughing because the concept is just too good. Once again, these guys are German, kind of freeform krautrock. Once again, very loose, very open, that sort of attitude. It feels like that informs the wild artwork. A lot of these krautrock bands have the attitude of ‘Yes, anything, let's do it.’ The crazier, the better. I’m surprised I hadn't seen this idea before: an embryo playing the guitar where it’s the umbilical cord. It's really funny. And also classic, it just nails it. That’s an idea that someone had to do. It's a little crude in a way, which adds to the weirdness of it.

I had some friends who were into them. From what I recall, they were a nomadic, wandering. freeform krautrock hippie band. I believe they travelled through the Middle East playing shows from their truck or something like that. I can't think of anybody who I've worked with who was just a one-off project-type person. Everyone embodies the music they make, especially when it comes to bands like Sleep and High On Fire – they really are those people all the time. Dedicated people like that really, really mean it. They love the music they make, and they live it for the most part.
